Halloween Pumpkin Carving 2011

HAPPY HALLOWEEN TO ALL!!! My husband Michael and our kids (Zoe and Ty) spent last night carving our pumpkins to celebrate Halloween.  It is by far our favorite holiday.  We had such a great time and I think the pumpkins turned out pretty good.  I can’t wait to see what they look like at night all lit up.  I’ll have to post another picture this evening. 1. Michael’s Pumpkin On the topic of candy people always ask me what I do for my kids on Halloween since I’m a health coach and our family avoids certain foods.  Well there are different approaches and you have to do what works for your own family.  For years I had an all you can eat policy.  Yes, that is right, an ALL YOU CAN EAT… at least for that night.  Once we collected all the candy we spent time sorting the ones we loved from the ones we didn’t.  Then we each got a small container (SMALL being the key word here) to put our candy in for later.  We would dip into this container anytime we wanted to go to the movies or had a junk food treat.  Then we could eat as much candy as we wanted for one night only.  Yes this seems extreme but the kids really don’t eat as much as you think.  The funny thing is since my kids don’t get much of this stuff normally they can’t handle a whole lot before feeling a bit ill.  The rest of the candy leftover we shipped away to my brother or sister in college to be eaten with their friends. This used to work for our family but in the past few years things have changed.  Our kids still go trick or treating and they still have fun.  But now we allow eat a few pieces of candy and I give them a small bag of candy which I purchase at places like Whole Foods.  These are candies and Chocolates without all the toxic things like fake colorings and additives.  I just feel better knowing that if they are going to treat themselves to junk food that they do it with ones that are made with better ingredients. One year we avoided the whole Halloween temptation and took the kids to Great Wolf Lodge for a night of family fun.  Again they still got candy treats but ones with better ingredients. This year my son is still planning to go trick or treating but my daughter, knowing that she is still going to get treats at home is opting to stay home.  We plan to make some cookies instead. My friend Elizabeth, also a health coach, says that she provides her kids with a gift certificate to her kids favorite store in exchange for the candy.  Then she makes sure to take them to the store the next day so that they can use their gift cards giving them an instant chance to collect on their reward.  There are so many different ways to handle this candy and sugar filled season.  Decide what works best for your family.  Life is always changing and so will the way you and your family handle this season.
